The Round Alphabet (nearly done)

The Round Alphabet, as I call it, is quite... well, round. I couldn't really think of another name for it. It's seen in a lot of random places around Inkopolis, and looks a bit more similar (at times) to the English alphabet.

While this alphabet starts with a Squid Sisters performance, it's not in the game. It's actually the poster for their live show at Niconico Chokaigi. Let's take a look:

Looking at the main title, we can conclude based on the repeating letters that this says "shiokaraz", with the "u" missing (explained in other post). Also, looking at the very top of the poster we can plug in what we already have and deduce that it does, in fact, say "niconicochokaigi", as the letters look similar as it is. However, do notice that the "c" seems to be the same glyph as the "g".

We can also take a look at Off the Hook's Tokaigi (different from "Chokaigi") performance poster:

Along with the poster saying "hicolor" (a reference to Inkopolis's Japanese name), we also have the word "live" broken into two parts on either side of Pearl's head. Quite a fast start!

Now we'll take a quick dive into a some screenshots to show examples:

This is a suction bomb, and it seems to say "gas" on it. Even though it doesn't explode with gas, the letter is similar enough to a "c" that this may have been the alphabet in its early development stages.

This machine seems to say "ufo catcher". just trust me on this.

I believe this was in SSA's blog, though I'm not quite sure. But it seems to say "ghij", which isn't a farfetched idea and will also come up later. There are times when the developers put strings of letters of the alphabet together, in order. And this actually helps with our next image:

Now we have a picture of a the Manta Maria map before it was released. I know the text is a bit unclear, but it says "kuro kajiki". That means black marlin, which is also the same fish (is fish the right word?) on the flag.

Next, let's take a look at Arowana Mall:

This shows us that the letter that looks like a "w" is actually an "m", making this say "coming soon...breaking...es". However, the "o" glyph is not actually an "o" in this alphabet, but given its larger size and incongruence with the rest of the letters I'd assume that it was just added to look more like English text for design purposes.

Next we'll look at the logo for the Splatoon delivery service:

This guy is the mascot of the delivery service "ikaten kyuubin" (イカテン急便). Ikaten is a portmanteau (a.k.a pun) of the Japanese word "ika" meaning squid, and "idaten" (韋駄天), meaning fast-footed person. Since we already have a glyph for "k", this must be a "d". Plus, it already looks like a backwards "d", soo....

Next we move onto another example of "glyphs in order" from the first game:

The top says "efgh jklmsogi pvej", the middle says "ostuvfghijk", and the bottom says "opqrstuv". How much more obvious could we get here?

That was a lot of jumping around! At this point, this is what we have:

Moving on, we'll go to find, like, two more letters:

I'm not sure how big this image appears in the post, but on the very, very, very bottom, there's a small line of text saying "1 year", commemorating the day that this Splatfest occured. Plus, it also says "squid...1st anniv...octo" in this script, so clearly we've gotten this right.

Lastly, let's go to Octo Canyon for one last letter:

I don't know how well this image is visible either, but the top sign says "world". However, it's not using the same character for "m", but instead a very similar-looking one.

And we're almost done here! Leave any other suggestions in a comment on this post!

  1. Hello ! I just found out about your blog and was pretty impressed with your results ! I have some acquaintances that are also deciphering splatoon scripts, so I thought of reaching out, in case you are interested in joining our communal efforts !
